Will LED lightbulbs save money?

Published 14th February 2024Read Time 4 min

In Ireland, the shift towards energy-efficient lighting has long been underway. Many would choose them for environmental reasons anyway, but a lot of people are truly interested in finding out if they will save you money.

Are LEDs more efficient?

In a word, yes! LED bulbs have been lauded for their energy efficiency and long lifespan. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs use up to 90% less energy to produce the same amount of light, which is a gigantic reduction. This efficiency translates directly into savings on electricity bills for households.

How long LED bulbs last is another factor that contributes to cost savings over time. While the initial purchase price of an LED bulb is higher than that of an incandescent or halogen bulb, LEDs can last up to 25 times longer. This means that over the life of one LED bulb, you would have had to replace a another lightbulb multiple times.

Will LED lightbulbs save me money?

This will depend on how much you use the lightbulb. For example, a household that uses lights infrequently may not recoup the initial investment as quickly as one that has lights on more regularly. But considering how long LED bulbs last, you will also save on replacements.

Electric Ireland estimate that you could save around €7 per bulb per year that you change to an LED. We checked up Woodies DIY website and they sell 3-packs of some LED bulbs for as little as €12.99!

Furthermore, there are environmental considerations. LEDs are more environmentally friendly than traditional bulbs, producing less waste and using less energy. For many in Ireland, the decision to switch to LEDs is influenced not just by potential savings but also by a desire to reduce their environmental impact.

So, is it worth it?

Homeowners should consider their specific circumstances, including how often they use lighting and the current cost of electricity. Despite the higher initial cost, the long-term savings and environmental benefits make LED bulbs an attractive option for many.

Considering the benefits, and how the price of LEDs have dropped, we would say it’s worth changing sooner rather than later for a lot of people. It’s also worth considering your own time. It can be a pain having to give up some of your weekend to head to a DIY shop to buy new bulbs. Having LEDs gives you a better chance of not having to replace bulbs. Best use that precious time off to do the things you love!
