A recent survey carried out by The AA underlines how prepared Irish motorists are for winter, with both positive trends and some causes for concern emerging from the car maintenance habits of Irish drivers. In a survey of 1,821 AA customers, the importance of winter vehicle care and its impact on road safety during the colder months is highlighted.
Annual Servicing Trends
More than half of the motorists in Ireland service their cars once a year, indicating a penchant for maintaining their cars. Of these, 18% get a check-up every six months. Price, reputation, and proximity have been identified as prime influencing factors, with 55% of the drivers finding their current providers very satisfying. In the same breath, 54% believe that they are too expensive, while 23% would be more satisfied with quicker wait times.
Winter Maintenance Habits
The survey also underlines the need for specific winter maintenance. On a more positive note, 71% of motorists undertake some form of winter health check each year, checking coolant and windscreen wash (81%), tyres (49%), and batteries (47%). However, a worrying 30% either rarely or never perform these checks, leaving their vehicles exposed to winter risks.
Elena Leao, Marketing and PR representative at The AA Ireland, emphasized the risks of neglecting winter maintenance. “Regular servicing, tyre maintenance, and battery checks can prevent winter breakdowns and ensure safer driving conditions,” Leao stated.
Expert Tips for Winter Safety
As temperatures drop, The AA offers practical advice for motorists to stay safe on the roads:
Check Tyres: Ensure tyre pressures and tread depths meet safety standards.
Replace Worn Components: Wipers and batteries should be inspected and replaced if necessary.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Carry essentials such as a flashlight, jumper cables, and warm clothing.
Monitor Weather Warnings: Stay updated on Met Éireann weather alerts and avoid unnecessary journeys during severe conditions.
In case of a breakdown, The AA advises staying calm, turning on hazard lights, and moving to a safe location if possible. “If it is safe to stay in the car, keep warm and remain inside while awaiting assistance,” added Leao.
The survey highlights a growing awareness among Irish motorists about the importance of car maintenance. However, with 30% of drivers overlooking winter checks, The AA urges all motorists to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and that of others on the road. Simple preventive measures can make a significant difference, particularly during the unpredictable winter season.
