⚠️ New Law Could Stop You from Renewing Your Car Insurance!
AA Ireland is now strongly urging all drivers to promptly update their driving licence number on all car insurance plans by March 31st, 2025. 📅
🚨 What would occur if you didn’t? Your car insurance will not be able to be renewed! However, a lot of drivers are still ignorant of this significant shift.
According to the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, this new regulation requires all insurance companies to gather driver numbers. In addition to this, they are obliged to thoroughly validate Driver Numbers against the national vehicle database. This is true for all Irish car insurance policies, no matter what!
❗ What You Need to Do
✅ Check your policy – update your Driver Number if it is not up to date!
✅ Renewing soon? – For insurance processing, a driver number that is valid is always needed.
✅ Changing insurers? – Your Driver Number must be given to the new provider.
✅ Adding named drivers? – Each driver listed on your policy must have their number registered properly.

🆔 Where to Find Your Driver Number
🔍 Your driver number is located in field 4d on the front of your Irish driver’s licence. It’s a 9-digit number (with no letters).
If you hold a foreign licence, check with your insurer about the unique requirements.
Why This Change is Important
This rule applies to all major road safety systems 🚦. Gardaí can quickly check if a vehicle is insured by using the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID), which holds each registered driver’s number. This will help:
