The AA urges drivers to prepare for Ireland’s updated speed limit changes

  • Speed limit reductions to be implemented on a phased basis
  • Measures align with the Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030
  • New laws aim to improve road safety and reduce traffic fatalities

Recent updates to Ireland’s speed limit regulations mark a significant step in the Government’s commitment to enhancing road safety. As part of the Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030, these changes aim to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by the end of the decade.

Key updates include the reduction of default speed limits on local and rural roads. For example, local roads will see a reduction to 60 km/h, with implementation planned on a phased basis. This initiative seeks to address the disproportionate number of fatalities and serious injuries occurring on rural roads across Ireland.

Elena Leao, Marketing & PR, AA Ireland, said: “Reducing speed limits is a proven way to save lives. These changes reflect a commitment to tackling the factors that contribute to road traffic accidents and fatalities. We encourage all drivers to familiarise themselves with the updated speed limits and adapt their driving habits accordingly.”

To support enforcement of the new limits, An Garda Síochána will continue to carry out speed checks and leverage advanced speed detection technology. The AA recommends that drivers remain vigilant, adhere strictly to speed limits, and take this opportunity to reflect on their driving behaviour.

The introduction of these measures is part of broader efforts under the Road Safety Strategy to make Ireland’s roads safer for all users. Slowing down not only helps to save lives but also has environmental and financial benefits, as more efficient driving reduces fuel consumption.

“Speed limits exist to protect everyone on the road,” Leao added. “This initiative is a positive step toward creating safer communities and ensuring that we meet the ambitious targets set out in the Road Safety Strategy.”

The AA advises all drivers to stay informed about the new limits, which will be rolled out on a phased basis. For more information on speed limits and other road safety tips, visit the AA’s website.
