You have two options in terms of bonus protection on your car insurance policy.
Step-back bonus protection or full bonus protection.
Underwriters differ in the cover they offer towards bonus protection. Here are some examples of each underwriter’s Step-back bonus protection:
In case of a claim, your No Claims Bonus will be reduced as follows:
- Allianz/AXA/RSA/AVIVA: Stepped back by 3 years
- Red Click: Stepped back by 3 years
- Zurich/KennCo: Stepped back by 2 years
For example, if you have 5 years of no claims on your policy, it will be adjusted to 2 years for Allianz/AXA/RSA/AVIVA and Red Click, and to 3 years for Zurich/KennCo.
ALLIANZ/AXA/RSA/AVIVA – Common Product Underwriters
In the event of a claim, your bonus will be stepped back. For example, if you have 5 years no claims bonus, your no claims bonus will be stepped back to 2 years, 4 years back to 1 year etc.
If you make a claim while insured on full bonus protection, these underwriters will allow you to make 1 claim in any three-year period for an unlimited amount, without it affecting your no claims bonus. Any subsequent claim you make will affect your bonus and you will be stepped back as noted above.
Red Click
If you’re insured with Red Click on full bonus protection, you can make 1 claim in any policy period for an unlimited amount without affecting your bonus.
If you’re insured with Red Click on step-back bonus protection, you will be stepped back by 3 years – so for example 5 years to 2 years
Zurich/KennCo
If you’re insured with either of these underwriters on step-back bonus protection, you will be stepped back by 2 years, so for example from 5 years to 3 years
If you’re insured with either of these underwriters on full bonus protection, you can make 2 claims in any 3-year period for an unlimited amount without this affecting your bonus.
If you have no bonus protection on your car insurance policy, upon making a claim, your bonus will be completely lost.
