Fuel Prices Dip in September: Relief for Irish Motorists

Published 20th September 2024Read Time 3 min

Exciting news for drivers in Ireland this September, both petrol and diesel prices have seen a decrease. The most recent AA Fuel Survey reports that petrol prices have dropped by 7 cents per litre, now averaging at €1.74, while diesel has also experienced a similar reduction, now standing at an average of €1.67 per litre. This welcomed price drop brings relief to motorists across the country

Surprising Price Reductions Amidst Declining Crude Oil Costs

The recent decrease in petrol and diesel prices comes as a delightful surprise, particularly after the reimplementation of excise duty on August 1st, which was anticipated to drive fuel prices up. Despite expectations, the cost of crude oil has been on a downward trend, currently resting at $72 per barrel. This decline in oil prices is now being mirrored in the prices motorists pay at the pump, providing a welcomed reprieve for drivers amidst a year of varying fuel expenses.

Electric Vehicle Owners Enjoy Reduced Costs

In addition to traditional petrol and diesel drivers, electric vehicle (EV) owners are also experiencing cost savings this month. The annual expense to cover 17,000 km has decreased by €58 for EV drivers, resulting in an average yearly charging cost of €857.77. This reduction in charging expenses is a welcome relief for electric vehicle owners, further enhancing the affordability of owning and operating an EV. Furthermore, Electric Ireland’s upcoming rate cuts, set to commence on November 1st, promise additional savings for EV enthusiasts.

Anticipating the Future

Although the current decline in fuel prices is well-received, the sustainability of this trend in the upcoming months remains uncertain. As Electric Ireland’s rate reductions approach and crude oil prices stay subdued, Irish drivers find themselves in a slightly more comfortable position. However, the looming effects of possible budget choices add an element of uncertainty to the situation.

In the meantime, motorists can take pleasure in the modest yet meaningful respite they experience at the fuel pumps this September.
