Winner: Skoda Superb
There was a landslide victory for the Skoda Superb in the Large Family Car category and it isn’t really that surprising as it has been the favourite choice of taxi drivers and wise company car buyers for years now and continues to be a huge hit with Irish customers. The estate model is particularly practical and there are few other cars that can match the generous legroom of the Superb.
The fact that the Superb retained its title in the last year of its production is particularly impressive. Worry not though: there is an all-new model on the way in 2024.
Runners Up
Skoda Octavia
Some might say that the Octavia should be in the family hatchback class, but it’s a measure of its, well, measurements that it straddles both that and the larger sector. The Octavia hatchback is spacious enough (and of high quality), while there’s a Combi estate for those that need to carry ludicrous amounts of stuff.
Toyota Prius PHEV
It’s perhaps only pricing that allows the new-generation of Prius into this sector (it costs €45,900), as it’s not a very big car in terms of passenger and luggage space. Nonetheless, it looks epic and its new plug-in hybrid powertrain is incredibly efficient. Toyota has ensured that the driving experience lives up to the new image, too. A sexy Prius? Who could have predicted that?
