Getting a better deal on Ireland's most popular cars

Published 13th March 2023Read Time 4 min

If you follow our New Car Reviews on the AA blog, you'll know that we're always looking for the best of the best of the new motors out there. And while we can let you know about the next great car to hit the market, it helps to take a step back and look at what drivers up and down the country are looking for.

While we've been busy helping drivers find great deals as part of the AA Approved Cars program, recent data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry has highlighted what cars proved popular on Irish roads this past year.

If you're in the market for a new or used car and want an idea of what's being seen as reliable and trendy, here's all the information you need.

Knowing what Irish drivers like to see on the road

For those a little clueless about car brands, it is very easy to be swayed towards one without really knowing why. It could be the manufacturer's price range, the car's features or just that a local dealer seems to have good deals.

You might like to know that Ireland's most popular car brands in 2022 were:

1. TOYOTA

2. HYUNDAI

3. VOLKSWAGEN

4. KIA

5. SKODA

In terms of movers and shakers, KIA is a new entry, overtaking Ford, which was the 5th most popular car brand in 2021. Ford would be one of the most popular brands we have offers on in the AA Approved Car Program.

Knowing what Irish drivers are going to the showroom for

Ireland's most popular cars sold in 2022 were:

1. HYUNDAI TUCSON

2. TOYOTA COROLLA

3. KIA SPORTAGE

4. TOYOTA C-HR

5. VOLKSWAGEN ID.4

Toyota still has the majority of cars in the Top5, but in 2021 the Toyota Yaris was also included, so their domination has diminished ever so slightly. No surprise, the KIA Sportage is the big mover getting into the Top 5 for the first time.

Again, if any of these cars are ones that you're thinking of buying, make sure you check out the latest used cars we have on the approved car network.

Knowing that Irish drivers are more interested in electric

As we mentioned last month on the blog, when looking at The Big Shift in EV Cars in Ireland, 2022 saw an 81% increase in electric sales, which now make up around 8% of the market (this excludes hybrids, which make up around 16%).

Thankfully, drivers don't need to be electric experts to look under the hood and know what to ask when shopping for an EV. Our network includes EVs from brands like Subaru, Peugeot, Porsche, Volkswagen & more. And if you are in the market for switching to an EV, we recommend looking at AA Electric Vehicle Insurance, which includes personal accident and wall charger cover.
