Skoda Superb

There was a landslide victory for the Škoda Superb in the Large Family Car category and it isn’t really that surprising as it has been the favourite choice of taxi drivers and wise company car buyers for years now and continues to be a huge hit with Irish customers. The estate model is particularly practical and there are few other cars that can match the generous legroom of the Superb. Traditionally this car was always chosen as a 2.0-litre TDI, which you can still have, but there is a greater choice now in terms of powertrains, including a very worthy PHEV version. Prices start at €38,220 for the Superb with a 1.5-litre TSI Petrol engine. Juror Neil Briscoe, from The Irish Times, said: “The Superb really does live up to its name. Massive inside, hugely practical, well-made, and relatively affordable. Good PHEV version, too.”

Dacia Jogger

The Jogger is a car that straddles many segments, you could call it an SUV, or you could call it an estate car. What it most certainly is, is a seriously practical family car that can take seven passengers in comfort, has tons of equipment and costs well under €30,000, which is going to make it very relevant to a lot of Irish buyers. The Jogger is powered by a 110hp petrol engine and starts from just €24,950. 

Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat is now nearing the end of its life, soon to go out of production but you can still get your hands on some of them and our jury feels that it still occupies a place as one of Ireland’s best large family cars. If you can get one, get your hands on the excellent GTE PHEV model, while the estate versions remain some of the most practical ways to ferry around your family.
