Top tips on getting your car serviced

Published 21st July 2022Read Time 7 min

We often forget to get our car serviced, but it’s so important to maintain your vehicle to ensure you are safe on the road. People associate getting your car serviced with spending lots of money and so they usually put off getting any repairs done. However, it’s important to remember that regular maintenance to your vehicle will actually result in savings in the long run!

If you’re unsure of the process, the AA has you covered. We now offer a comprehensive approved car servicing, so motorists across Ireland can have their motors in top condition.

For anyone who wouldn’t know where to start with car servicing, here are the AA’s top tips:

Lots of people may not know when their vehicle needs a service, but the good news is that the majority of cars will tell you via a flashing light on the dashboard. If this isn’t the case with your car, then read the manual as this will tell you when your car needs to be serviced.

It’s also wise to check a calendar – if a year has gone by, then book your car in for a service. AA says an annual service is best and this is the case even with cars with low mileage. Cars with a higher mileage may need more than one service per year.

If you own a car in Ireland then it is your responsibility to ensure it is in a safe, roadworthy condition. While it is not a legal requirement to get your car serviced, it is definitely recommended, especially if you want to pass the National Car Testing (NCT) Service.

Is it worth getting the car serviced by a dealership?

Main dealers are usually more expensive than independent dealers but there might be extra benefits, such as them collecting the car and dropping it back, or arranging alternative transport for you.

While a car is under warranty, it’s best to stick with a main dealer for the brand. Once you are out of warranty though, it may be a good idea to shop around and find the best dealer in your area. As part of the AA Approved Service, we only work with garages that meet our high standards.
